A disciple says to his Teacher, “What can I do to attain God?” The Teacher replies, “What can you do to make the Sun rise?” The disciple replies angrily, “Then, why are you giving us all these different methods of prayer?” And the Teacher says, “To make sure you’re awake when the Sun does rise."

There is no such thing as spirituality, really. We use that word to speak of a most natural way of living in this world. I work with persons near death, on a daily basis. I sit with them. I listen to them. I love them. I help them get ready to die if they are not ready. I simply journey with them if that is what they want. And, seeing these lovely souls, I can assure you, much of what we give our attention to is not worth the time we give to it. I cannot think of anything more glorious than to live awake, to see the Glory in life and enjoy the Glory of life. If spirituality refers to an escape from life, or a seeking a better life, then, I am convinced you do not need it. If spirituality refers to wake up to this life, to your life, to our life, then, good. I cannot offer anyone a spiritual practice to get life or a better life, for there is no life to get and no better life, for this life is Life, and if you cannot see this, then you need to allow something we can call Grace to wake you up to the heaven you are already walking around in. There is no divine delay plan, as much religion wants you to think: Life is here, now, one with this life, within and outside you, all around you. Heaven breathes you, even as you breathe heaven. When you are captivated by this Truth, you are in Love with Life. You will not need to be preoccupied with an afterlife or cling to some idea of what that will be. If you are already drinking the sweet Wine, why would you need to be distracted with some idea about some other so-called time and place? Feeling the Sky under your feet, is that not enough? If you are making Love with the Beloved, why try to understand it? - simply give yourself to it, enjoy it.
